If you're suffering from a herniated disc injury, one of the best exercises you can do is backwards walking. This exercise forces your spine to go into extension, which pushes the herniated portion towards its original position.

As you can see from this video, a disc herniation usually moves backwards where it can pinch the spinal cord and nerves, causing severe pain.
